Inside Boeing’s Starliner production facility at Kennedy Space Center, hundreds of workers are busy building a spacecraft that will take astronauts to orbit next year from American soil.

John Mulholland, Boeing Co.’s (NYSE: BA) vice president and program manager of the CST-100, or Starliner, monitors the progress of the capsule several times a day, walking the production floor, asking questions and inspecting. But as many times as Mulholland sees the capsule’s work, his eyes light up when talking about it. “I’ve always had a passion for this kind of work,” he said during an exclusive tour of the facility he provided to Orlando Business Journal on April 24. “There’s so many lessons we’ve learned on how to build this capsule from the history of other capsules.”

Contracted through NASA, Boeing is aiming for an unmanned test launch in August, and if all goes well, a crew launch will follow next year atop United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket.
