High school foreign language students may soon replace “adios” with “algorithm” and “bonjour with “bitmap.”

For many, computer jargon such as html or XML already seems like a foreign language – and the Florida Legislature seems to agree. If it passes a closely watched bill already approved by the Senate, students could meet their foreign language requirements by using coded language.

Computer coding, which includes writing and analyzing computer programs, is considered an important skill in today’s job market — but is it a foreign language?
