A conversation you’ll find hard to avoid at startup gatherings in South Florida is the one that discusses the disparity between new local startups and the rate at which those startups scale.

The inaugural Unbound Miami “innovation festival” at Mana Wynwood this week was no exception, with a Wednesday panel titled “South Florida Startup Success” kicking off on exactly that note.

Moderator Thomas “Tigre” Wenrich, the CEO of Miami incubator and co-working space the LAB Miami, prefaced a discussion among the panel by alluding to the most recent indices by the Kauffman Foundation, which rank South Florida No. 1 at startup activity but No. 36 at startup scaling.
