Space Florida preps for small satellite launches at Cape Canaveral

Space Florida is taking its plans to capitalize on the growing small rocket business seriously.

Florida’s economic development agency for the aerospace industry inked a deal with the U.S. Air Force for Space Launch Complex 20 at the Cape Canaveral Spaceport. Merritt Island-based Space Florida’s deal will let it fast-track site assessment in anticipation of entering a lease with the U.S. Air Force to enable redevelopment of the launch complex for commercial small satellite launch.

“The redevelopment of [Space Launch Complex 20] continues to expand Florida’s commercial launch capacity for the rapidly growing small satellite launch segment,” said Space Florida President Frank DiBello in a prepared statement. “As more of the Cape Canaveral Spaceport’s available infrastructure and real estate becomes occupied, Space Florida’s ability to offer market-based development and a commercial leasing structure for key assets provides value to both launch operators and the state of Florida.”
