Proposed SBIR rules would force some grant winners to commercialize faster

Unless a lunar colony is in the works, David Green might find it a long shot to hit on an immediate commercial application for his Physical Sciences Inc.’s invention that converts moon dust to oxygen.

At least some regard as lunacy a potential requirement that would force businesses like Andover, Mass.-based Physical Sciences to do just that with some of the federal science projects they pursue.

Under a proposed new directive from the Small Business Administration, advanced Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants would be subject to a new “commercialization benchmark” to ensure that companies are following through on efforts to develop markets for the technologies those grants underwrite.
