Port Canaveral CEO speeds up spaceport development: ‘We realized the need is here now


If SpaceX is just the start of the future of reusable rockets, Port Canaveral will need additional space for other high-tech vehicles — and fast.

The Canaveral Port Authority approved a $17.9 million contract with Tampa-based Orion Marine Group in early February to begin construction on North Cargo Berth 8 — a multi-purpose dock for cargo and rockets. The berth is the first step toward Port Canaveral building a spaceport, an area that will have enough space for major rocket companies to transport their vehicles without interfering with incoming or outgoing cruise ships.
