Just a few short years ago, bigger seemed to be better for Gainesville’s Regional Transit System.
With bus ridership rising every year from 1996 through 2014 to a whopping 10.8 million riders, RTS bought a bigger bus fleet, hired a bigger staff and moved into a bigger headquarters. Big ideas such as bus rapid transit were considered.
But since 2015, RTS has experienced declining ridership. Last year, 9.7 million riders took the bus — still a big number for a community our size but, as The Sun recently reported, ridership is on pace to fall further this year.
