Downtown column: Higher education leads Downtown revitalization

Though it is considered a pillar of progress, education is overlooked when we consider the future of Downtown.

Despite the fact that one of the area’s biggest hurdles has been reaching young people who’ve long been convinced that Downtown has nothing to offer them, it looks as though higher education will provide a solution.

The University of North Florida recently joined Jacksonville University and Florida State College of Jacksonville when it announced it would open classrooms in the Barnett National Bank Building in early 2019.

This push is led by JU, which began developing a Downtown campus in the SunTrust Tower last year, followed by FSCJ’s newly opened restaurant and residences.
