FAU Tech Runway Announces Open Call for Startup Applications

Applications are being accepted for the third class of Venture Vintage companies at Florida Atlantic University’s Tech Runway. Startups are sought in all industries with an emphasis in technology. The deadline for applications is Friday, Aug. 21. The program application process includes a business plan, pitch deck, three letters of recommendation and a bio for each founder. The criteria for evaluation will include, but is not limited to, the market opportunity, distinctive competence/competitive advantage, financial understanding of revenue model and investment potential.

Winter Park social media firm Izea settles patent lawsuit

Winter Park advertising firm Izea has settled a three-year-old patent lawsuit with Dallas-based Blue Calypso. Izea specializes in sponsored social advertising, where celebrities or social media stars endorse products and services in exchange for a fee. It also features an online marketplace for writers and bloggers for hire. Izea was being sued along with Groupon, Yelp, Foursquare and MyLikes. According to the federal court docket in the case, Izea was the only company to settle recently in the ongoing case.

Orlando firm one of five winners in Open Innovation Challence

Semplastics LLC of Orlando was named one of five winners in the inaugural Open Innovation Challenge sponsored by GE and Statoil, a Norwegian-based energy company. Along with companies from Montreal, New Brunswick, South Carolina and North Dakota, Semplastics was selected from a pool of 100 submissions from applicants in 30 countries.
