AT&T-backed startup raises $1.3M

A Miami-based startup whose platform allows parents to read together with children through an interactive video call has raised new capital to expand.

Caribu secured $1.3 million this week with investments from telecommunications giant AT&T (NYSE: T) and Washington, D.C.-based investment firm Revolution’s Rise of the Rest Seed Fund. Be Curious Partners, a venture capital capital firm that invests in parenting startups, led the round.

“With only 2 percent of VC funding going to Miami, and less than 1 percent of funding going to women of color, I am emboldened and encouraged by the support that Caribu has gotten from our investors both in and outside of Florida,” CEO Maxeme Tuchman said. “We are excited to continue to change the way that families communicate and ensure that children are exposed to reading and literature, despite geographical constraints.”
